What Are Dentures?
For patients requiring replacement of all teeth in the upper and/or lower arch of the mouth, removable dentures are an excellent treatment option. These images are sent directly to a dental laboratory, where an expert technician builds a model of your mouth. The lab then works closely with your doctor to design your prosthesis using the model as a base. As each phase of the design is completed, your doctor will meet with you to check for proper fit and bite alignment. It usually requires multiple incremental try-in fittings to determine the best final result for you. After a brief period of adjusting to the feel of the dentures in your mouth, they will begin to feel natural to you, making eating easier and your speech clearer.
Removable Partial Dentures
When a patient's condition does not allow for a bridge or dental implants, removable partial dentures are a great treatment option to replace missing teeth. These dentures have either metal or pink acrylic clasps, that help the replacement teeth attach to the remaining teeth in the arch for stabilization.
The digital impression and design process is very similar to the procedure overview mentioned above for complete dentures.
Immediate Dentures
If you require replacement of all teeth in your upper and/or lower arch of the mouth, your doctor may recommend temporary dentures to wear during the healing process, or while permanent dentures are made. Temporary dentures, also called immediate dentures, can be fitted immediately following tooth extractions or dental implant surgery. With temporary dentures, you won't have to go without teeth during the healing process, which can take as long as several months. They also help to protect your gum tissue and make the transition to permanent dentures easier. With the temporary denture, you will be able to continue eating and speaking like normal and to maintain your appearance while you heal from tooth extractions and/or implant surgery.
Fixed Hybrid Dentures (All-On-Four or Teeth In A Day)
For patients requiring replacement of all teeth in the upper and/or lower arch of the mouth, screw-retained dentures with dental implants are a superior treatment option. They improve your appearance by replacing your missing teeth while providing improved overall function for eating and speech, with the added stability of a fixed restoration thanks to the use of implants. Screw-retained dentures are a prosthesis placed in the mouth containing replacement teeth mounted in a base made of pink resin formed over a metal structure to create an exact fit over your existing gums. They are secured in place using dental implants, which are artifical roots placed into the supporting bone. Utilizing implants not only provides a solid foundation for the denture teeth, allowing for optimal eating and speaking, but also helps to preserve the surrounding bone from shrinkage over time without a tooth root structure to support it.
When the implants are placed, if they are stable enough to handle the force of biting, abutments will be secured into the implants, and the temporary dentures will be secured to the abutments. At subsequent visits, your dentist will monitor the healing process, letting you know when the area is ready for the next phase of treatment. Once your implants have fully integrated into the bone, digital impressions will be taken to begin the fabrication of your final hybrid denture prosthesis. When the overall alignment, bite, and esthetics are confirmed, the final denture will be fixed into place. This treatment option is an excellent alternative to traditional dentures, as they offer so many benefits for a better quality of life.
